Introduction to logistics & Information technology

The successive running of logistics and supply chain industry always depends on the proper flow of material, finance and information. These will include inventory, transportation and customer service operations. The information flow refers to flow of information or transaction activities that follow or initiate the physical activities.

IT enablers in Logistics

The enablers of logistics are

Logistics Information system, Warehouse Management System, Transportation System, Global positioning System, Automated Warehouse, Electronic Data Interchange, Bar coding, Real Time communications, Radio Frequency Identification.

Warehouse Management System

Warehouse Management System, means a category of software designed to manage the operations of a warehouse. The primary purpose of the WMS is not to take orders but to take them into account and to optimize the preparation. The scope of WMS is limited and does not cover the entire supply chain. In general only the Warehouse.

Transportation Management System

Transport management System is a software solution for planning and execution of external flows, and thus the transport of goods (transport optimization), while taking into account the multimodal transport, reloading and international trade.

Global Positioning System

A person equipped with this receiver can locate and move on land, sea, air or space around the Earth. The GPS system has experienced great success in the civilian
and created a huge commercial development in many areas shipping, road, and location of trucks.

Onboard Computer

This is a device boarded in vehicles, allows to communicate with his headquarter, to receive new orders. Combined with the GPS.

Automated Warehouse

Automated warehouses are fully automated with rails and robots. There is no need for truck drivers or warehousemen.

Electronic Data Interchange

Electronic Data Interchange has successfully enhanced the communication between firms which is essential for logistics. This technology requires firms to have common data formatting and transmission standards or protocols. Such technologies have been employed by companies to coordinate their value chain activities including logistics.

Bar Coding

Bar coding is one of the most useful IT enablers to date and has made significant impact in the practice. Nowadays it is rampant in anything that needs to be identified and tracked.

In practice, most firms prefer to use industry standards rather than proprietary standards for most of their bar codes on their products.

Real Time Communications

The logistics IT capability of real-time communications is essential for maintaining the flow of information. To make real-time tracking of goods, logistic information systems of business partners should have real-time communications capability.

The business partners require an integrated messaging architecture which exchanges information’s such as constant tracking of vehicle status, customized business flows, changes of routes of running vehicle, dynamic changes in route plan, while customizing business flows and format transformation.

Radio Frequency Identification

RFID is an Automatic Data Capture technology that uses radio-frequency waves to read a movable item to identify, categorize & track.

E-Logistics

The group of technologies and processes for coordinating logistics information flow over the internet has been named as e-logistics.

E-Logistics is a Dynamic set of communication computing and collaborative technologies that transform key logistical process to be customer centric by sharing data knowledge and
information with Supply chain partners.

Yard Management System

A yard management system is a software system designed to oversee the movement of trucks and trailers in the yard of a manufacturing facility, warehouse, or distribution center.

YMS provides real-time information on the location of trailers in the yard and allows yard employees to move trailers from staging to docks to fill orders in an efficient manner.

Supply chain & Information technology

The introduction of information technology in the field of SCM offers many opportunities to the companies to cut the cost and to ensure the smooth flow of this valuable information throughout the operational areas of business with the help of some IT tools and techniques.

Some of the important software systems among them are: Enterprise Resource Planning, Customer Relationships Management, Information technology for E-Business, Internet (B2B, B2C) and Material Requirements Planning (MRP), Electronic Data Interchange.
